Many times in marriage; we can tend to look to our husbands as the main provider of all our needs. We often get married thinking… He will complete me. This can set us up for a huge disappointment. After several years, we discover that some of our needs are still unmet and it seems like he doesn’t want to meet them or can’t. What’s a wife to do?
“The Lord is a shelter for the oppressed, a refuge in times of trouble.” Psalm 9:9 (NLT)
Psalm 9:9 clearly tells us that the Lord is our shelter and our refuge, not our husbands. Don’t get me wrong; God has placed our husbands in our lives to fill a very important role but it’s not the one many of us think it is. You see, God is way more interested in our character than our comfort. The most important role our husband plays in our lives is not to meet all our needs but to help us grow to become more Christ-like. Yep. I know. Not quite the “daily encouragement” you were hoping for today. Sorry.
The most important role our husband plays in our lives is not to meet all our needs but to help us grow to become more Christ-like. Yep. I know. Not quite the “daily encouragement” you were hoping for today. Sorry. So if you feel oppressed under mounting trouble in your marriage; guess what – God wants you to know two things:
1 – HE is the one you need to go to for shelter and refuge.
2 – Accept this season as an opportunity for you to mature and grow in your faith.
Face it; there is no other relationship in your life where you will have the opportunity to learn what true UNCONDITIONAL love is except in marriage.
Wives, I will tell you straight up; you must learn to go to God to get all your needs met. He is truly the only one who can “complete you”. That is the ONLY way we will have the power to love our husbands. As we go to God every morning, He keeps filling us up with love that will spill over onto our husbands.
Feeling empty, pray this prayer:
Lord, I’m here. I’m coming to you right now for shelter. I’m feeling empty and have nothing left to make it through today but you promise to be my refuge in times of trouble. So I’m asking, please help me with…(fill in the blank with your specific need). I don’t know how you do it but I trust you have the power to help me through this. Fill me with your love today so that I can offer it to my husband. In Jesus’ name I pray, AMEN.
