Feeling pooped after this past month? I am. After all the parties, shopping, and decorating; I desperately need some down time to rest. Not to mention, I could use like two extra weeks just to catch up on everything that didn’t get done due to the extra holiday activities. How about you?
“Those who live in the shelter of the Most High will find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.”
Psalm 91:1 NLT
I love the promise this psalm offers. If we live in the shelter of our awesome heavenly father, we WILL find rest! Isn’t this amazing? Maybe you’re thinking, well, that is great but why don’t I feel more rested?
I asked that same question. Here’s what I discovered when I decided to dig into this verse a little deeper.
This promise is for those who “live” in the shelter of the Most High, not for those who just visit on occasion or drive by, or drive through and get it “to go”, if you know what I mean.
Are you “living” in God’s shelter? Have you decided to settle in? Have you put your clothes in the drawers or are you still using a suitcase?
According to the dictionary, the word shelter means a place that provides food and protection. Interestingly, it doesn’t mention that this place is “temporary”. Starting to see where I’m going with this?
God wants us to “live” in His shelter where he can provide for you and protect you. This isn’t so much a physical place where we need to be sitting with the Bible open all day long for us to experience this rest He’s promising; it’s more of a state of mind.
It’s a state of knowing that no matter what is happening around me right now, God will provide for me and protect me; and then acting accordingly. This means, instead of acting fearful or constantly worrying about what’s coming, remain confident, believing in God’s promises in His word.
Maintaining this state of mind is quite a challenge for me. I want to do a quick check in in the morning and be on my merry way. But what often begins to happen is because I so rushed my morning time with him, I quickly forget what He has told me if I even gave him any time to speak in the first place. It’s no wonder that by lunch time I’m back to my worried and restless state.
Instead of rushing your morning time with God, slow down and take your time. When I take the time to really dig into the word and what God wants to teach me, I’m filled with peace and rest.
Then, if I write down a verse that really spoke to me and look at it often throughout the day, It’s way easier to maintain that inner confidence in spite of my circumstances.
Life is not a sprint. It’s a marathon. If you want to find rest, take the time to really live in the shelter of our Most High!
Lord, I pray that you will help me to remember to really live in your shelter. Not rush through but take the time to dig into your word every day. Remind me that when I feel restless and worried about the future, I’m forgetting your promise to provide for me and protect me. Lord, I want to feel your rest today. I’m fearful of (fill in the blank). I’m worried about (fill in the blank). I’m going to live in the shelter of you, my Most High because this is where I will find rest knowing that you will provide and protect me no matter what the future holds. In Jesus’ name, I pray, AMEN.
